I’m on the 2021 Blue Peter Book Awards longlist!

November 1, 2020

I’m sleep-deprived, unshowered and wearing the world’s biggest jumper (and blaming it all on the baby as if I wouldn’t have been in pretty much the same start last year). But I’m also SO happy because I’m on the Blue Peter Book Awards longlist with Who Do You Think You Are?, this technicolour beauty of a book!

Who Do You Think You Are?, published by Wide-Eyed Editions, is a fun and fantastically illustrated (by Blok Magnaye, not me!) book of personality quizzes. It gives kids and young people (anyone around 9+) a whistlestop tour of all sorts of ideas – spanning ancient times to the present day – about psychology, personality and the self.

It feels extra-special being longlisted for this amazing award because I totally missed this book’s launch and I felt like I’d really let it down by not being able to shout about it coming out. The thing is, I was busy being stuck in hospital for two weeks (at the very height of coronavirus chaos, another bit of excellent timing) needing some extra care either side of a slightly tricky birth. We’re all good now but it’s so great to see that Who Do You Think You Are? has found a few fans without my help!

A more official-looking photo, I think you’ll agree…

I’ll be keeping my fingers crossed and watching Blue Peter this Thursday when they reveal the shortlist, but I’m in such amazing company on the longlist and this news has made me so happy that – as the cliche goes – I’m happy just to be included. Wait, is that even the right cliche? Hmm, did I mention I’m very sleep-deprived…?

If you like the sound of fun personality quizzes that help kids learn about psychology, you can order Who Do You Think You Are? now.

Update:
Sadly my book wasn’t one of the three non-fiction titles that were shortlisted, but it was still so much fun to watch Blue Peter and see Who Do You Think You Are? on screen!

There are some brilliant fiction and non-fiction titles in the shortlist, including my favourite A Kind of Spark by Elle McNicoll (read my interview with Elle here). If you’re reading this before 15 January 2021, you can enter BookTrust’s brilliant competition to win all of the shortlisted titles – what a great haul!
